Great Barrier Reef Legacy Deploys QNAP NAS on Research Vessel to Protect Marine Research Data

  • Introduction

The Great Barrier Reef Legacy (GBR Legacy) is a non-profit organization based in Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia. The GBR Legacy aims to improve the long-term survival of the Great Barrier Reef.

The GBR Legacy operates the Great Barrier Reef's only independent research vessel and is changing the way the reef is understood.

  • Challenge

The GBR Legacy research team produces a large amount of raw data on a daily basis during every expedition trip. The team has multiple teams of scientists in charge of collecting research data, using a huge amount of equipment (including drones, remotely-operated underwater vehicles, and underwater mapping devices).

To manage a tremendous amount of scientific and video data, it is very important for the team to be equipped with a centralized storage device with enough space to securely retain and back up collected data. Easy file access and sharing is another factor to consider. With so many people working together, the GBR Legacy requires a cross-platform file sharing solution to ensure that all of their members can access files whenever needed. High performance is also paramount, as they need to upload/download data, and edit videos simultaneously when carrying out their out marine research projects. The storage solution they choose must be capable of enduring a heavy workload while providing uncompromising reliability and sustainability.

Solution

To meet their high demands for data storage and performance, the GBR Legacy chose the TS-1231XU-RP. The TS-1231XU-RP features a high-performance AnnapurnaLabs, an Amazon company, Alpine AL314 quad-core 1.7 GHz ARM® Cortex-A15 processor with 4GB DDR3 RAM (upgradable to 16GB). In addition to two Gigabit Ethernet ports, the TS-1231XU-RP also includes two 10GbE SFP+ ports for high-speed connectivity, providing the research team with the high bandwidth required for fast file transfer.

  • Large storage volume and easy-to-use interface

The TS-1231XU-RP has high storage potential with 12 drive bays. This provides the GBR Legacy research team with sufficient storage space to store their crucial scientific data and video files. With the convenient web-based interface, tasks like file transfer, backing up and management are greatly simplified.

  • Cross-platform file sharing

The TS-1231XU-RP supports AFP protocols for file sharing across Windows®, Mac®, Linux®/UNIX® networks. This allows all the team members to easily access files stored on the NAS, enabling greater teamwork and collaboration.

Benefit

Since adopting the TS-1231XU-RP, the GBR Legacy has reported a noticeable work efficiency increase. The helpful TS-1231XU-RP has become vital in their daily research work, as it provides a centralized storage solution to store, transfer, and manage files. They can now upload and edit raw video data simultaneously. The TS-1231XU-RP greatly helps the GBR Legacy research team optimize their research workflows.

“The QNAP NAS has allowed us to make storage available to multiple camera operators and editors at once. Sharing large volumes of data in a way that ensures 100% productivity,” said Dr. Dean Miller, Director of GBR Legacy Science and Media team.
